Simply put, an engagement session tends to be angled towards that exciting announcement of “hey, we made the jump and plan to get married!” An engagement session is so much more beyond ‘save the date’ photos. For my clients and I, this is the chance for us to get to know each other, comfort levels, and coaching you through posing so that your love reflects genuinely through those photos. As a Scottsdale engagement photographer, I harness my expertise of each color palette of the desert, and help guide us all towards the visions you have been dreaming about, to those gorgeous prints in hand to hang on your walls for decades to come.
There are hundreds of photographers who take great photos to choose from but choosing the right one can make a world of a difference. Your photographer should make you feel at ease, and elated during your session. Couples should completely connect and vibe with all of their wedding vendors and this is the best place to start. As your engagement photographer, I will hand-hold you through this entire process from wardrobe planning, hair and makeup, location scouting and permitting, posing, and truly just being an ear for you and your vision. By the end of each session, my clients are smiling and giggling with utter excitement to see their final photos, and to ultimately see me again to document that magic once more on their wedding day.

I get these two comments almost every single time: “we are so awkward, we don’t know what to do in front of a camera” or “we have never had professional photos taken, can you help us?” This is what I am here for. My clients should not be thinking about anything else during their session besides having an absolute blast and falling in love with each other all over again.

No modeling experience is required. No past posing classes are needed. I make sure that with the time that we have, I work efficiently and effortlessly.
So how do I bring all of this to life? Through authenticity. I often coach my clients on how their bodies around to poetically match their natural flow, how to chat with each other like it’s the first date, when to stare into each other’s eyes like it’s the moment you realized you loved this person for the first time.

I Don’t Expect You to Know How to Pose
I coach gently, I don’t push or strain something that doesn’t exist or isn’t there. Again, this day is about you and you feeling confident,
Movement like dancing, running, twirling, hugging, tickling, etc is always encouraged so we can all live vicariously through you both and these photos.
You won’t be hearing: “Ok, we are going to walk 10 steps this way, look back and smile, and make sure you dip your partner correctly before doing it all over again for 3 times until we get the shot”. That sounds like an absolute nightmare honestly. Nobody operates like and most importantly, nobody loves like that. Within a few minutes, you will feel like you belong to your body and I am simply a fly on the wall to document all of that.

“The Sonoran backdrop really speaks to us because we met in Arizona and love hiking” That sounds absolutely wonderful! Camelback Inn provides the most gorgeous desert scenery. With its sweeping views of Camelback mountain and modern architecture, this venue provides each gallery with the most refined look possible in the valley.

Planning Every Detail Together
From our initial chat, I want to know your love story and how I can help that reflect in your photos. We will discuss the ideal location and work with suggestions from myself to make all things photo related align. Time of day is super important! Allow me to coach you on when the lighting is best as well as closing and opening times for any specific venues. While we have our fingers crossed that all will go well, I will have a backup plan in case something happens like timing, weather, outfit issues, health etc. We will create a plan together to build a strong communication stream without being too suspicious and over done.

Let’s chat about outfit planning. Unless you’re a full time stylist, this can seem daunting! Generally, I recommend an outfit and palette that reflects your upcoming wedding day. Whether it’s bright and funky colors, or black tie sleek, we can plan some gorgeous set ups that scream “this is us”, while not overshadowing your wedding outfit. You want your engagement photos to showcase not only you as a newly engaged couple, but also what to expect from your upcoming wedding. The best thing about living in the desert, is that while the temperature can get quite extreme, every month is open as an option for your engagement day. With the correct planning provided by myself and including your vision, we will create a moment that makes sense regardless of the month you choose.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should we book our engagement session?
You have a few options here. Book your engagement session when you book me as your wedding photographer, it’s included in your package! If this is a surprise session, it’s best to book your session months in advance. This helps ensure I have availability as well as creating your itinerary and working through all logistics. Most clients book at least a year in advance to make sure their photos are ready for save the dates.
What if we’ve never had professional photos taken?
That’s totally fine, I actually prefer it that way! Allow me to guide you the entire way as we build comfort with each other and learn all of the tricks to prepare for your wedding day.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes. Always yes. With this being said, I would make sure someone else is onsite to handle your pets so we can make sure it doesn’t take away from any moments.
How long does an engagement session last?
Most of my clients book 1-3 hour sessions with me depending on locations, depth of vision, and outfit changes.
How many outfits should we bring?
This depends on how much time you book with me. If it’s an hour-long session, one outfit makes the most sense to ensure there’s enough time to make your vision come true. Remember, we don’t want to rush! Anything past an hour we can start adding more outfits in.
Can you help us choose a location?
I will help you with everything! Location is one of the first steps we lock down.
What happens if the weather changes?
While weather is usually steady in Scottsdale, I always ensure to have a plan B in my back pocket.
Can you photograph a surprise proposal?
YES. This is one of my favorite things to do. It’s beyond fun being sneaky and documenting that authentic reaction.
